Description

Hillside is a detached house located in Rottingdean, Brighton, dated 1724 as indicated by a plaque above and to the left of the porch, which also features the initials B/D/S. The building is constructed of red and blue brick in Flemish bond, with blue headers, and includes cobbles and some red brick on the returns and rear. The roof is covered with asbestos slate.

The house has two storeys and a five-window range, making it double-fronted. It features a distyle wooden porch supported by Doric columns, a panelled frieze, and a wide projecting cornice. The entrance is flat-arched, with an overlight that has decorative glazing, and a panelled door designed in its original style. All windows are flat-arched, with frames that are set slightly back from the wall. The ground floor windows have heads made of gauged brick under a gauged brick panel. The house also has a modillion cornice and side stacks, with scattered fenestration on the returns, including a new entrance on the left-hand return under a lean-to roof. A substantial wing extends westward from the back of the building, creating an L-shape, and features a uniquely distorted gable end. The interior has not been inspected.
