Description

Prospect Cottage is a two-storey terraced house with a basement and dormer, dating from the 18th century, although the street facade was altered in the late 20th century. The house is constructed of brick laid in Flemish bond, now painted, with render and a tiled roof. It has a two-window range. Steps lead to a flat-arched entrance with an overlight containing decorative glazing, and a panelled door that is of original design, though the canopy is a replacement. A two-storey bay is located to the left of the entrance, carried out over the basement window on turned wooden columns; the bay's spandrels are of smooth render, and the windows are casements. There is a flat-arched window above the entrance with sashes of original design. The house has a parapet, flat-arched dormers in the mansard roof, and side stacks. The rendered left-hand return has a flat-arched casement window to the ground and first floors, and two flat-arched sash windows to the attic. The interior was not inspected. A plaque beside the entrance notes that Sir Edward Burne-Jones lived here from 1880-1898; during this time and the first half of the 20th century, the house was known as North End House.
