Description
The Elms is a detached house located on The Green in Rottingdean, dating from the 18th century. It features a stucco exterior, a tiled roof, and brick chimneys. The building has two storeys with dormers in the roof and a three-window range on its double-fronted entrance, which is flanked by pilasters. The round-arched entrance is framed by pilasters that support an open pediment with a panelled soffit and archivolt, and it includes a fanlight and a panelled door of original design. There are canted bays on either side with original sash windows and panelled spandrels. The house has a modillion cornice and two flat-arched dormers in the roof, with end stacks. The roof consists of three pitched sections running east-west, with a range on the west side and a lower hipped range of two storeys to the north. The left-hand return features a five-sided, two-storey bay with a modillion cornice and flat-arched dormer. The garage range facing Falmer Road has been significantly altered. The interior has not been inspected. Notably, Rudyard Kipling lived at The Elms from 1897 to 1903.
