Description
The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a parish church built in 1865 on the site of a medieval church. It was rebuilt by architect Teulon in a Neo-Norman style. The church features a nave with three bays and aisles, a chancel with shorter north and south chapels, and a tall western tower that incorporates the entrance. The walls are made of polygonal malmstone with Bath stone dressings, and there are shallow buttresses at the east and west ends. The eaves and plinth have plain mouldings, and the building includes round-headed small windows, as well as plate-traceried circular windows at the east end and in the middle of the aisles. The roof is tiled, with gables at the center of the aisles, contributing to a tall effect in the interior. Inside, there are plain Norman features complemented by rich Byzantine capitals. A stone pulpit supported by columns is present, along with a Purbeck font from the 12th century, which is a square block resting on a central drum but lacks the four columns that were previously at each corner. The aisles contain 19th-century prescription tablets painted on metal sheets, which were once fixed above the chancel arch of the old church. The tower is particularly noteworthy, featuring a semicircular stair turret in the center of the south wall, shallow buttresses at the lowest part, a steep helm roof with copper gargoyles at each corner, and a tall doorway accessed by a flight of steps.
