Description

A row of seven cottages dating from the mid-18th century, located in Itchen Valley, Avington. The cottages are constructed of brick with flint bands and have old plain tile roofs. They are arranged as two-storey, two-bay units. The central cottage features a slightly projecting full-height bay with a brick pediment containing a dentilled architrave. A 19th-century planked door is set within a solid frame. Ground-floor windows are two-light steel casements set within segmental-headed openings, while first-floor windows are also two-light steel casements. The remaining cottages have the same window arrangement, but without the projecting bay. The wall exhibits thin flint bands at plinth level, a wider band above ground-floor openings, and two thin bands between the first-floor windows. The roof is hipped, with ridge stacks positioned on the party walls between Nos. 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, and 6 and 7.
