Description
The Church of St John sub Castro is a parish church built in 1839 by George Cheeseman. It is constructed from flint with red brick dressings and features plain tiled roofs. The church includes a west tower, a nave, and a short chancel. The tower is short and has castellated turrets. The side windows are very large lancets with unarchaeological tracery, separated by thin buttresses.
The west front has a central tower that projects slightly, with clasping buttresses and recessed sides, while the roof is concealed by sloping parapets. The central window consists of two lights, with a panelled section below and a rose above, accompanied by a hoodmould. Below this is a pointed arched doorway with double boarded doors, an overlight, and a hoodmould. The side windows also have two lights above boarded doors.
An original doorway from the church, likely dating to the 10th century, is attached to the east wall. This doorway features an unmoulded arch flanked by three demishafts and demirolls, with slab capitals. The remains of a chancel arch can be found on the south side of the building, which has a restored inscription commemorating a certain Magnus of Danish royal stock who chose to become an anchorite at this location.
Inside, the church has galleries on simple columns on three sides and a short apsed chancel, along with a tie-beam wagon roof. There is also a painting titled "Christ and the Children," which is Venetian and dates to around 1600.
