Description
The churchyard walls to the Church of St John sub Castro were built in the 19th century. They are made of flint with red brick bands and quoins. The walls consist of two low, curving sections, approximately 15 yards long, which create a forecourt for the church, featuring double low central gates and low pedestrian side gates. There is a battered wall surrounding the churchyard to the north that extends for about 70 yards before turning east for approximately 100 yards. These walls stand between 8 and 12 feet high. They follow the line of the former Town Walls, with the western and northern limits of the churchyard marking the boundaries of the walled town. The walls may include some materials from the original Town Walls.
