Description

Fox Cottage, School House, and Fern Cottage are a row of four distinct cottages located in Upper Farringdon. These cottages date from the 17th century, 18th century, and 20th century. At the eastern end, Fern Cottage is a small two-storey house from the 18th century, featuring a plain tiled roof and brick walls laid in Flemish bond. It has cambered openings on the ground floor, one upper casement, and two lower casements, along with a boarded door in a plain frame.

At the western end, the largest and oldest unit is a single-storey and attic structure with two above three windows and a west end outshot. This cottage has a thatched roof with one eyebrow dormer, while the lower part of the east side is tiled and includes a gabled dormer. The walls display exposed massive timber framing with plaster and herringbone brick infill, although the east side is mostly painted brickwork. It features casements and plain doors, with the east side also having a tiled canopy, indicating that this end has been converted into a separate dwelling known as Littlecote.

The middle building, formerly the old School House, functioned as a hall school from 1844 to 1925. It now has an upper floor with three dormers; the upper part of the roof is thatched and includes a central bellcote, while the lower part is tiled with three flat-roofed dormers. The walls are constructed of 20th-century brickwork, and the building features casements and a doorway within a porch.
