Description

West Cross Cottage is a house that dates from the 16th century, with additions from the early 17th century and early 19th century. The exterior features slate-hung walls and a plain pantile roof with a shafted stack. The building includes a late medieval timber-framed hall with two bays, which has a 17th-century chimney inserted in the smoke bay. An upper floor and a timber-framed bay on the north side were added later, along with recladding in the early and late 19th century and a minor rear service block.

The west front of the cottage is two storeys high and has four windows above two. The upper windows are casements, while the lower ones are Victorian sashes. The entrance features a plain 18th-century doorframe with a six-panelled door, two of which are glazed, set within a trellis porch that is partially concealed by greenery. The lobby entrance has been modified by a 17th-century staircase projection at the rear, which has an outshot on its south side.

The east wall displays exposed brick-rogged framing, and the single-storey service wing on the north side is constructed of brickwork with a low-pitched slate roof. The north gable has lower walls of exposed framework, but most of it is tile-hung from the late 19th century, featuring scalloped bands. Inside, the framework reveals the different phases of construction throughout the building.
