Description
Hockley House is a house that was once a coaching inn, dating from the late 18th century, with additions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of brick and has a plain tile roof. The building features a 5-bay, 2-span block from the 18th century, with a similar style wing added in the late 19th century, set back and attached to the right end, and a 20th-century wing at the rear on the left end.
The front of the house is three stories high and has five bays. The central entrance has an altered half-glazed double door set within a Doric porch, which includes two pilasters, two columns, and an altered entablature and pediment. On either side of the entrance and on the first floor, there are 18th-century 12-pane sash windows with rubbed brick arches and stone sills. A raised brick string course runs along the first floor, while the second floor features small 6-pane sash windows, also with rubbed brick arches. The roof is hipped with boxed overhanging eaves and symmetrical stacks on the end walls.
Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase located in the hall behind the front door, which has barley-sugar balusters and a moulded handrail. An arch with timber panelling and a keystone adds to the interior details, which largely retain their original character.
