Description
The Church of St James is a parish church built in 1838 for H J Mulcock. It is constructed from rendered flint and brick with stone dressings, featuring a slated roof and a slate-hung bell turret. The building is a single cell in early English style, with a central south porch and offset diagonal buttresses at the corners. The east side has a triple lancet window with hood moulding, and there is an oval window in the gable. The sides have single lancet windows, also with hood mouldings. The gabled porch has a three-centred arch, diagonal buttresses, and brick coping with kneelers. The west window is similar to the east window. The gable ends have brick copings with kneelers. The bell turret is unusual, consisting of three stages with a gablet on each face of the top stage. Inside, all fittings are contemporary except for the altar screen. There are seven blank panels on the walls with Gothic surrounds and a similar triangular panel above the doorway. The roof features an exposed queen post design with wavy cusps on either side of each member. A gallery at the west end is supported by the first of two tiers of cast iron columns that support the bell turret.
