Description

No. 9 The Square is a house and shop located in Petersfield. The core of the building dates back to the early 17th century, but it was extended at both the front and rear in the late 18th or early 19th century. The original timber-framed structure has been refronted with 18th-century brickwork, painted at the rear and stuccoed at the front to mimic masonry with incised lines. The roof is hipped and covered with old tiles.

The building has two storeys and features one window on the front elevation. The first floor includes a three-light canted bay window with vertical glazing bars and horns. There is a modillion eaves cornice above. The ground floor has a 19th-century shopfront with a moulded cornice on the fascia and a two-light shopfront with an iron grille underneath.

On the rear elevation, there is an early 19th-century horizontally sliding sash window. The side elevation reveals one exposed charred beam, along with some early brickwork near the base and additional 18th-century brickwork. Inside, the first floor features an axial beam with lambs-tongue stops and a large brick chimney breast. Although the roof structure is not visible, there are smoke-blackened timbers that have been repainted, along with remnants of a hoist. This suggests that the building may have originally served as a merchant's house.
