Description
Farringdon Hurst is a house dating from the 18th century, with early and mid-19th century elements. The exterior is stuccoed and features a parapet with coping and a band, a first-floor band, and a high plinth. The older part of the house has a plain tiled double-pile roof, while the rear is covered with slate. The building has three phases, with the earliest visible inside and the exterior displaying early and later Tudor/Gothic features, along with vernacular rear extensions.
The east front is two storeys high and has three windows. The central window, located above the entrance, is an early Gothic oriel with a castellated parapet and pointed lights. Flanking this are two-storeyed splayed bays in a later mid-19th century Gothic style, which are similar but bolder in design. The 18th-century doorway, accessed by two stone steps, features an oval arch with a lead radiating fanlight, panelled reveals, and a 20th-century half-glazed door. This doorway is set within an early 19th-century open porch, characterized by its exaggerated slenderness, Doric dentil order, open pediment, and reeded columns.
Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase and panelled doors with architraves, Regency doors in one room, and bookshelves set within oval-arched recesses in another.
