Description
Number 2 Home Farm Cottage and Dairy at Basing Home Farm is a farm cottage and dairy built in 1865 for William Nicholson of Basing Park. The structure is made of flint with red brick dressings and some tile-hanging, topped with clay plain tile gabled and hipped roofs. It features brick axial and lateral stacks with set-offs. The plan of No. 2 is a mirror-image of No. 3 Home Farm Cottages, forming an L-shape with a stair tower at the angle and a dairy at the rear connected by a covered way. The building is designed in a Gothic style and has two storeys with asymmetrical elevations and gabled cross-wings. The ground floor has large three-light wooden mullion windows with segmental arches, while the first floor features pointed arches with tile-hung tympanae. The stair tower in the angle has a pyramidal roof, lancets, and a porch. The dairy, attached to the rear by a covered way with a timber arcade, is octagonal in shape, timber-framed with diagonal brick nogging, and has a hipped conical roof with a lantern. The interior has not been inspected.
