Description

The farm buildings at Basing Home Farm were constructed in 1865 for William Nicholson of Basing Park. The buildings are made of flint with red brick dressings and feature a clay plain tile roof with gabled ends. This large planned farmstead includes barns, an engine house, cart and implement sheds, and cattle sheds arranged around two large covered yards, along with a detached barn to the west.

On the exterior, the north range contains barns and cart and implement sheds, with a gable-ended barn at the center featuring a tall pointed arch doorway in the gable end and an engine house attached to its west side. The east range has cart and implement sheds on the right and a gabled bay at the center topped with a bellcote and a wrought-iron weathervane. The south elevation displays pairs of gables at either end and a wider gable at the center for the cattle sheds, with open-fronted covered yards in between, supported by wooden posts on low walls beneath tiled roofs. The detached barn to the west has a twin-span roof with gables at either end and features two large pointed arch doorways with plank doors.

Inside, the two covered yards each have feeding passages on two sides, and their tie-beam trusses are supported by timber posts. The detached barn also has tie-beam trusses, while the barn at the center of the north range features a common-rafter roof with collars and long wind-bracing.
