Description

Yew Tree House is a house that dates from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, with some alterations around 1900. The building features a mix of materials, including a tile-hung front with scalloped bands, brickwork in English bond, exposed framing with bricknogging, small areas of coursed malmstone, and boarding. The roof is tiled, hipped at the rear, and includes outshots and gabled dormers.

Originally, Yew Tree House had a late-medieval timber-framed hall with a smoke bay, which was later modified by adding a large chimney stack and an upper floor, transforming it into a lobby-entrance dwelling. The staircase was replaced by a 17th-century staircase block that was incorporated into a large 17th-century timber-framed rear wing. The south front of the house has two storeys and two windows, featuring a plain roof with a shafted stack, tile-hung walls, 20th-century casements, and a plain doorway with a hood supported by brackets.

The west side of the house was refaced and restored around 1900 and includes the rear wing, which has two storeys and an attic with three windows. This side features a tile-hung gable on the south side, two gabled dormers, brick walls in English bond, casements, and an open porch.

Inside, the fireplaces have 16th-century chamfered stone surrounds facing east and 16th-century timber bressummers with a Tudor arched form on the west side. The staircase displays framing that may be re-used from the Jacobean period, with crude newels, and most of the framing is visible throughout the interior.
