Description

Charity Farmhouse is a house that dates from the 16th century, with later alterations in the 18th century and early 20th century. It is a late-medieval timber-framed building consisting of three main bays, with the central bay being wider and originally featuring a smoke bay. This area was later modified by adding a chimney in the smoke bay and a first floor to the hall, creating a lobby entrance with a door and staircase.

At one end, there is a single-storey 18th-century wing that projects at right angles, while a 20th-century outshot with an open front is located at the other end. The house has two storeys and four windows, topped by a prominent hipped roof and a single stack. The upper part of the northeast elevation has exposed timber framing with brick infill, while the lower walls are made of brick in Flemish bond. The southwest elevation features partly-exposed timber framing in the lower wall, with the upper section being tile-hung and displaying patterned bands. The southeast end is also tile-hung above a wall of malmstone, which has brick dressings that continue around the wing.

The windows are casements, and there is an early 20th-century door beneath a moulded canopy supported by brackets. Inside, the timber frame is exposed, and several walls have been lined with small panelling within a moulded framework from the 18th century, which has been re-fitted from another source.
