Description
Empshott Grange Cottages are two houses built in the 17th and 18th centuries. The walls are made of roughly coursed malmstone, featuring stone dressings on the older parts, including mullioned windows and a high plinth, while the later openings have brick dressings that show alterations. The front wall, dating from the 18th century, is constructed of ashlar malmstone with galletting and brick quoins, and includes a first-floor band, cambered arches, and a plinth. The roof is hipped and tiled, with the eaves lowered at the east end, and there are two hipped dormers from the 18th century at the rear, along with a shafted stack. The building has a three-bay layout from the 17th century, with a staircase wing at the rear. The north front elevation is two storeys high with three windows and an outshot at the east end. The front features casements with old leaded lights, and there is a doorway with a moulded canopy supported by carved brackets. The rear elevation shows several alterations, including blocked windows and a doorway. Notably, The Grange, located 60 metres to the south, is a larger house built in the mid-19th century, which likely replaced this building.
