Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church located in Worldham, dating back to the 13th century, with significant restoration completed in 1865 by David Brandon. The church features stone walls and a tiled roof, showcasing an Early English design that has been largely rebuilt to resemble its original form. It consists of a nave, a chancel (with the former apse removed), a small Victorian vestry, and a south porch.
The nave is distinguished by five lancet windows and four buttresses, while the west gable displays three separated lancets. The short chancel has a higher lancet on each side and a three-light east window set within an arch that once led to the apse. The north and south doors of the nave, along with a smaller priest's door, feature deeply moulded arches above recessed orders of shafts, although the north door is now filled in. The Victorian gabled porch and vestry add to the structure's character. The roof has a single ridge and includes a western bell turret topped with a shingled spire above a timber frame.
The walls predominantly exhibit polygonal walling with ashlar dressings. Inside, there are deep window reveals with roll mouldings and recessed shafts in the chancel. The church contains several wall monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as a medieval tomb recess in the south wall of the nave that holds a female effigy dedicated to Philippa Chaucer. A Victorian font is also present within the interior.
