Description

Old House Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse with early and late 19th-century alterations, situated on Shelley’s Lane, Worldham. The walls are rendered, with one wing constructed of coursed malmstone and brick dressings. The roof is unusual, featuring two sections of differing pitches, both half-hipped and covered with slate. The building has a timber frame, representing two distinct phases of construction, and was reclad in the early 19th century, with minor extensions added in the late 19th century. The west elevation was remodelled in the early 19th century, exhibiting a symmetrical appearance with a central two-storey section and two windows. A setback on the north side reveals the older frame, while a single-storey wing extends to the south with continuous walling. Large sash windows are set in reveals, complemented by a small casement window in the wing. The entrance features a four-panelled door with a simple hood. The north elevation is two storeys high and has an irregular pattern of windows. The upper walls display exposed timber framing with painted brick infill, while the lower walls incorporate brickwork of both Monk and English bond. A prominent attached stack features recessed panels in the upper section and blind arches below, tapering above eaves level to a narrow shaft. Internally, the angle of the L-shape reveals exposed framing to the north-south section, incorporating a single storey and attic. The upper part of the two-storey east wing features tile hanging. A staircase projection is located within the angle, with timber framing above a brick lower wall. Casement windows and plain doorways are present throughout.
