Description
The Shallows is a house dating from the 17th century with 20th-century additions, located in Itchen Stoke. It features a timber frame with colour washed brick infill and additional colour washed brickwork. The roof is covered with old plain tiles and the building is positioned end on to the road.
The structure is two stories tall and consists of four bays from the 17th century, with a three-bay addition from the 20th century at one end. The timber frame is mostly intact, showcasing large diagonal braces. There is a gabled porch in the road end bay and irregular two-light casement windows. The rear of the building has an outshot in the three bays, except for the centre bay, which is two stories high with a hipped roof.
On the road-facing gable end, there is a projecting three-light lead casement window on the first floor, supported by cut brackets and topped with an old tiled pent roof. The roof is steeply pitched, featuring overhanging eaves and a bargeboard at the rear end, with a hip at the other end. A large 20th-century ridge stack is located over the second bay from the road.
