Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church built in 1866 by Henry Conybeare for Rev Charles Conybeare. It is constructed from brown and grey rubble stone with limestone dressings and has a slate roof. The church is designed in a 13th-century French style and consists of a single cell with a polygonal, gabled apse. There is a north vestry and a lean-to porch across the west front. The apse gables feature 2-light bar tracery windows, while the sides of the church have four sets of three tall lancet windows separated by offset buttresses. The pointed west door has granite shafts, and the porch is stone roofed, above which is a large wheel-window. The steep roof is adorned with a diaper pattern of slates, iron cresting, and an east gable bellcote.

Inside, there is a vaulted lobby with a marble-shafted doorway. The church is divided into bays by wall columns, with diaper work in plaster below the windows, blank arcading on the west wall, and a tall, boarded trussed rafter roof. The apse is semi-octagonal and features maze pavement, moulded ribs, and wall columns. The furnishings are contemporary with the font made of coloured enamel gilt bronze and black Californian marble. There is also a brass memorial to Mrs Batmanson, dating from around 1500, which has been removed from the old church and is now in the care of the Redundant Churches Fund.
