Description

Exton Cottage is a house dating mainly from the 18th century, although it incorporates an earlier structure with numerous rear extensions added in the early and mid 19th century. The front walls are rendered, while other walls are of painted brickwork in Flemish bond, featuring blue headers, and Flemish Garden Wall bond, with some cambered openings. The roof is tiled, and its higher front section obscures a complex arrangement of lower roof shapes at the rear, resulting from the joining of separate roofs above various extensions. The south front elevation is two storeys and an attic, with eight windows. Most windows are sash windows in exposed frames, with two casements and one 20th-century splayed bay window. A half-octagonal bay window contains the entrance, accessed via a half-glazed door. The rear extensions suggest the earlier date of the main front block, and large, tapered stacks are located at each end of the building.
