Description
Forge Sound is a cottage that was formerly two separate cottages, dating from the 14th or 15th century, with alterations around 1600 and further changes in the 18th century, along with minor modifications in the 20th century. The building features an exposed frame with brick infill, while other walls are made of painted brickwork with some areas of rendering. It has a hipped tile roof with gablets, a catslide at the rear, and an outshot at the north end. The medieval hall consists of three bays, with the two northern bays having an aisle on the west side, and a wider south bay on the upper floor. The chimneys and upper floor were inserted into the open hall around 1600, and the building was reclad in the 18th century, which included the addition of the north end outshot. The east front has two storeys with irregular window arrangements, featuring casement windows and a plain doorway. There are also lead signs for Sun Fire Insurance (No 112958) and Farmers Fire and Life Insurance. Despite extensive external repairs, the original timber-framed structure is still preserved within.
