Description

Wakes Cottage is a house dating to around 1840. The upper parts of the walls, from the middle of the upper windows upwards, and the gables are tile-hung with scalloped bands. The rest of the walls are brick, constructed in a Flemish bond pattern with blue headers, flat, rubbed brick arches, and a plinth band above a stone base. The roof is tiled with front gables on each side, and a parapet between them.

The front (north-east) elevation is symmetrical, with three windows over two storeys. The windows are tall, coupled casements featuring Gothic detailing; the central window is smaller, with a pointed head. The doorway has a moulded Gothic frame and a four-panelled door, protected by a thin lead canopy that is identical in design to that found at a nearby property, Bell Cottage on Gracious Street, dated 1845. The side walls are constructed from malmstone ashlar with brick quoins and a plinth. The building is included on the list for its contribution to the surrounding group of buildings.
