Description

This is a mid-18th century, L-shaped group of cottages situated on the corner of Swan Street and Spain Street. The cottages are arranged as numbers 36 to 42, and each has two storeys and two windows, except for number 36, which has one window on each floor which has been blocked. The exterior is built of red brick with decorative blue headers arranged in a patterned design. One wall incorporates galleted malmstone with brick dressings. The roofs are steeply pitched and covered in tiles. The windows are horizontal sliding sash windows with glazing bars, set in near-flush box frames; the ground floor windows are set beneath segmental brick arches. The doorways are simple and set in frames similar to the windows. A stone inscription on the north side reads: "This house and gardens was given to this Parish for a Poor House by our worthy friends the late John Jolliffe and Millam Jolliffe Esquire in the year 1771."
