Description
The Church of St Leonard is a parish church located in Hartley Mauditt, with origins dating back to the early and late 12th century, along with alterations from around 1300 and the late 19th century. The church features rendered walls and a tiled roof. It has a Norman nave and an Early English chancel, complemented by a Victorian north vestry, south porch, and west wall. The exterior is plain, showcasing some small Norman windows, lancets, a coupled Perpendicular window, and Victorian windows at the nave and east end. At the west gable, there are tall lancets flanking a central stepped buttress, which supports a stone octagonal base for a wooden bell turret topped with a shingled spire. The south door, dating from around 1200, has two recessed orders, with cushion caps on the shafts, outer dog tooth moulding, and an enclosing ornament of horse shoe pattern, along with a deeply-moulded inner arch. Inside, the nave is plain and concludes with a Norman chancel arch, while the small chancel contains several notable wall monuments from the late 17th century.
