Description
The Round House is a house that was formerly a toll-house, dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The original structure features brick walls laid in Monk bond, brick dentil eaves, and rubbed flat arches with keys at the ground floor. It has stone quoins at the corners of the ground floor and a plinth above a stone base. The roof is tiled, with a conical shape over the octagonal section and hips and gables on the other parts. The building is octagonal, with a larger unit added to the west side, which was raised and further extended in the late 20th century. The original building appears to have been single-storeyed, but a first floor was added later. Three openings have been filled, and there is one ground floor and one first floor casement window. The southeast face includes a 20th-century gabled brick porch. The rest of the building reflects late 20th-century work, featuring casements and another porch. During renovations, a plaque was added, inscribed with "SS1767, restored WGB 1982."
