Description

No 17 High Street is a house built in 1874. It features a stucco exterior with a wide first-floor band that has a moulded string above and a cornice below, topped with a modillioned cornice at the balustraded parapet, which conceals the roof. The building has two storeys and a basement, with a regular three-window front.

On the first floor, there are large casement windows with transom lights set in raised surrounds, each adorned with pediments on volute brackets; the outer bays have segmental pediments while the inner bays have triangular ones, all with raised panels below. The ground floor has round-arched windows with keystones and bracketed cills, featuring sashes without glazing bars.

The central panelled door is topped with an overlight and is set within a recessed and rusticated surround. Doric columns flank the door, supporting entablature blocks, with Doric pilasters marking the outer edges of the slightly projecting door surround. There are five steps leading up to the door, flanked by balustrades that descend to low square piers. An area to the left includes one glazing bar sash. This building was originally constructed for the Lewes Savings Bank and is now known as the Oddfellows Hall.
