Description
The walls to the south of Southover Grange are located along Southover High Street and continue along the north side of Eastport Lane. These walls date from the 16th and 17th centuries and incorporate stone from the nearby Priory. The section adjacent to the Grange is made of stone, while the portion to the south and along Eastport Lane is constructed from flint with brick coping. The walls vary in height from approximately 6 to 10 feet and extend about 50 yards along Southover High Street and 100 yards along Eastport Lane. There has been partial rebuilding along Southover High Street in the later 20th century as it crosses over the Winterbourne. Additionally, there is a further stretch of wall along the north bank of the Winterbourne, made of stone, measuring about 6 to 8 feet high and 40 yards long. The walls feature various 19th and 20th-century arches, including two made from individual carved stones sourced from the Priory. There are also several pieces of earlier carving inserted into the wall, mostly from the 12th and 13th centuries, which include scalloped capitals, a capital with stiff-leaf carving, carved corbels, and decorative mouldings such as dog-tooth and chevron patterns.
