Description
The former chancel of the Chapel of the Hospital of St James, now the pottery shop of Lewes Priory School, dates from around 1350 and has been heavily restored, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features knapped squared flint on a chamfered stone plinth, with some stone and brick quoins and dressings. The roof is plain tiled, adorned with bargeboards and finials. There are two single-light windows with cusped ogee-heads set in rectangular chamfered openings. The west end is constructed of random and snecked dressed stone. The interior is completely clad. The Hospital of St James was established by the monks of Lewes Priory in the 14th century when the chapel of St John within the Priory Gate became too small for local needs, leading to the conversion of the hospitium into the future parish church of St John, Southover.
