Description

Clayton Fold House is a farmhouse dated 1629, though it likely has origins a few years earlier, with 19th and 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed from coursed, squared, buff sandstone rubble and features a Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge, and two stone chimneys. It has a two-storey, three-bay front, with the left end bay obscured by a lean-to made of the same materials. The central bay contains a rebated ovolo-moulded two-light window, although the mullion is missing, and above it is a horned four-pane sash window. To the right, there is a four-panelled door beneath a chamfered wooden lintel. Above the door is a copper plaque set in a moulded stone surround, which reads:

"THIS HOUSE AND LANDE WAS GIVEN BY THOMAS OVEFE TO THE POORE OF THESE TOWNSHIPS FEARNLEE, TAXALL, KETTLESHULME, DISLEY, PRESTBURY, MACCLESFEELDE FOR EVER Wch. THOMAS DYED THE 16th OF JULY IN THE YEARE OF OVR LORD 1629."

The eaves have projecting stones that support the remains of wooden guttering. At the rear, there is a rebated two-light mullioned window (with the mullion missing), and the left gable features both a two-light and a three-light window (with one mullion surviving), both also rebated. Inside, the layout consists of two rooms and a lobby. The main room showcases an ovolo-moulded beam and ovolo-moulded lintels behind the windows. There is a mid-19th-century heavy fire surround and an iron range in the original chimney breast, which also contains a square wooden spice cupboard set in a dentilated surround.
