Description
Gap House is a farmhouse with a rear range dated 1662 and a front range dated 1773, both built for the Brocklehurst family. There is an addition to the right dated 1976. The building is constructed from coursed, squared, buff sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings. The roof features Kerridge stone-slate and Welsh slate in the valley, with four gable stone chimneys. The house has a square plan with two parallel ridges and a two-storey symmetrical east front with three bays. It has a sandstone plinth, rusticated quoins, and an ashlar band at the first floor. The end bays contain 12-pane sash windows beneath flat rusticated heads. The entrance features a semi-circular headed, rusticated doorcase with a fanlight that has radial glazing bars, leading to a pair of 20th-century panelled doors. Above the doorcase is a datestone that reads G A B 1773, with a similar 12-pane sash window above. The two-storey west front has a variety of windows, including a two-light tall chamfered stone mullion, two-light sliding sashes, and a semi-circular headed light. A date plaque on this side reads GB 1662. The interior appears to be mainly from the 19th century but has not been fully inspected.
