Description
The barn and shippon at Wright's Farmhouse date from the 17th century and have undergone minor alterations. They feature dry stone walls made of buff sandstone rubble and a roof of Kerridge stone-slate with a stone ridge. The building has a long rectangular shape with partial extensions at the rear. The barn is the central part of a low structure, which includes a cart entrance with a wooden lintel on the west side and a smaller door on the east front. There are also some ventilation slots and square pitch holes. Small shippons are located at either end of the barn. On the north side, the door is framed with long and short quoins and a lintel, while the south gable has a near laithe arrangement with cambered, nearly triangular stone heads above the doors and windows. Inside, there are four roof trusses consisting of a tie beam, two diagonal struts, and a collar. This barn is noted for being one of the best examples of dry-stone construction, with all stones laid "watershot" to shed rain and the absence of mortar allowing the structure to breathe. Similar examples can be found at Rainowlow Farm and Hedgerow Farm in Rainow.
