Description

The Church of St Matthew is a parish church built in 1868 and 1873 by the architect Richard Norman Shaw. It is constructed of rough-faced coursed rubble with a tiled roof featuring verge parapets on the nave and south porch, as well as a central tower and chancel. The design is inspired by 14th-century architecture.

The nave, completed in 1873, consists of three bays set on a plinth with two-stage buttresses only on the sides of the west gable. It has three-light pointed windows with trefoil heads on the sides and roundels in the larger west window. There is a low-sided porch at the south-west end with a pointed arch entry, moulded imposts, and wrought iron strap hinges and bands over boarded doors.

The tower has approximately three stages, with a cambered-in design below the top stage and string courses between the half-stages. It is attached to, but narrower than, the east end of the nave, featuring buttresses on the north and south sides that die in at the bell chamber level. The lower stage has a heavily rebated two-light labelled pointed window, while the bell chamber has paired pointed windows on the north and south sides and paired quatrefoils on the east and west. The tower is topped with a pyramidal roof, which is a prominent feature of the church.

The chancel consists of one bay and includes two-light pointed windows, with a three-light window at the east end.
