Description

Dwarriden Cruck Barn is a barn located approximately 200 meters southeast of the junction with Rushy Lane and Mill Lane. It is likely from the 17th century, with the south gable rebuilt in the 20th century. The barn features internal timber framing, dry-walled thinly-coursed sandstone, and a stone slate roof. It consists of one cruck bay with an additional bay to the north, both of which are aisled on the east side. The structure has a plinth and very long quoins. The south gable includes a large opening with mortared quoins and a wooden lintel, along with two mortared buttresses on the west wall. There are square vents on the north gable.

Inside, the barn has two pairs of crucks that are lofty and set on high stylobates on the aisle side, raised within the walling on the west side. The western blades have a slight ogee profile. Wall posts rise from the eastern blades to support a soffit-morticed arcade plate. There are tie beams above the purlin level; the southern pair also has a wall tie, while the northern pair features halvings for spurs (with one spur present) and halvings for a low tie beam. The barn has a single purlin with an additional purlin to the aisle, some windbraces, and a square-set ridge at the saddle apex. Evidence of truncation at the south end of the building is shown by an empty scarf joint to the arcade plate. The barn is illustrated in C. F. Innocent's "The Development of English Building Construction," published in 1916.
