Description
Russian Cottage is a cottage built in 1855, designed as a copy of a model of a Russian farm sent to the Duke of Devonshire by the Tsar. It features coursed squared sandstone and timber arranged to resemble logs laid horizontally. The cottage has a steeply pitched stone slate roof, which includes three ashlar stacks within the roof pitch and one ashlar ridge stack. It has a cruciform plan and is a single storey building. The north arm is constructed of stone, while the other arms are made of logs that cross at the angles.
All three gable ends are similar, showcasing elaborately fretted bargeboards that extend below the eaves line, along with a collar and a central pendant. There are a pair of white painted casement windows with panelled shutters, dentilled pediments, and decorative aprons. The logs are left with a natural finish, and the joinery is white painted. In the southeast angle, there is a lean-to porch with a balustrade and a plank door. The stone wing to the north features various casement windows and a plank door.
