Description

Rock Villa is a house dated 1839, likely designed by Paxton and Robertson. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a diamond pattern stone slate roof that overhangs on paired timber brackets. The building has ashlar stacks and a plain band at the first floor.

The house has a T-plan and is two storeys high with a three-bay south elevation. The central bay projects and has a gabled roof with a moulded cornice and decorative bargeboards. On the ground floor, there is a round-arched window that rises to a decorative point, flanked by two blind lancets with raised ashlar heads. Additionally, there is a two-light casement window with a fanlight. The left return wall features a round-arched doorway with a panelled door and a traceried fanlight, flanked by blind rectangular lights with plain ashlar surrounds. To the left of this doorway is a two-light casement window with an ashlar surround and an overhanging returned hoodmould. The right return wall has a round-arched doorway with a two-light casement window and a traceried fanlight, also flanked by blind rectangular lights with plain ashlar surrounds. To the right is a broad two-light window with a plain ashlar surround and a mullion, topped with decorative cresting.

On the first floor, there is a central tripartite window with a flat arch and a plain ashlar surround. The left return wall has a plain rectangular window and a pointed arched window with cross casement and an ashlar surround. The right return wall contains a plain rectangular window and a moulded rectangular panel displaying the date 1839, also with decorative cresting above. The gable end to the west features a castellated canted bay window with a blind lancet above.

Rock Villa was built as part of the picturesque model village designed by Paxton for the Sixth Duke of Devonshire.
