Description

The School House and attached garden walls, built around 1830-1840, are likely designed by Paxton and Robertson. The building features coursed squared sandstone with a pitted tooled finish, along with ashlar dressings, a plinth, and quoins. It has a hipped and gabled Welsh slate roof, lateral and ridge stacks, and overhanging bracketed eaves.

The house is two storeys tall with an asymmetrical three-bay east elevation. The left bay is advanced and has chamfered quoins and a pedimented gable. The ground floor includes a glazing bar sash window with a moulded bracketed hood. To the right, there is a projecting ashlar porch with bold, plain proportions, a cornice, and a blocking course, featuring a panelled door. Adjacent to this is another glazing bar sash with a moulded bracketed hood. On the upper floor, there are three two-light casements, with the leftmost one having a bracketed hood.

On the south elevation, there is a broad pedimented gable, a canted bay on the ground floor with a cornice and blocking course, and a glazing bar sash. Above it, there is a two-light casement with a bracketed hood. A bay set back to the left features a glazing bar sash with a bracketed hood and a two-light casement above. At the northeast corner, there is a round-arched doorway with a low coped wall and square piers enclosing the garden, topped by a gothic timber fence to the south.

This building was constructed as part of the picturesque model village by Paxton for the Sixth Duke of Devonshire.
