Description

The ornamental fountain, attached wall, and railings were designed in 1840 by John Robertson in a Norman style. Constructed from coursed squared sandstone and ashlar, the fountain is integrated into a bank, serving as a retaining wall. The north elevation features a central projecting block with pseudo machicolation and a moulded parapet. There is a blind round arch resembling a Norman doorway, which consists of three stepped orders, a chamfered impost band, and zigzag detailing on the inner order, with moulded corbels on the outer order and a chamfered hoodmould. Inside the arch, the fountain spout is adorned with a relief of a wild man, and it has a moulded semi-circular water basin.

To the right, there is a wall with a parapet and a corbelled-out square turret topped with a pyramid cap. On the left, a square tower-like bay features two blind Caernarvon arched windows. Above the central feature is a square turret with blind Caernarvon-arched windows, flanked by paired pilaster strips and topped with a pyramid roof. The walls on either side are coped, and to the north, low walls topped with railings and square angle piers with pyramid caps enclose a garden. This structure was built as part of the picturesque model village created by Paxton for the Sixth Duke of Devonshire.
