Description

The Gate House and attached railings, formerly known as Castle Lodge, is a lodge built in 1842 by John Robertson. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone and features a battlemented parapet, with plain and fishscale tile roofs. The building has an irregular plan and elevation, highlighted by an octagonal tower on the northeast side.

The structure has one and two storeys and a three-bay east elevation. The tower on the right includes a flight of steps leading to a doorway with a chamfered surround, a hoodmould, and studded doors. This doorway is flanked by a round-arched window and blind round-arched windows. Above, there is a casement window in a chamfered surround, flanked by blind cross loop arrow slits. To the left, a recessed bay features a single light casement on the ground floor, also in a chamfered surround with a returned hoodmould, while the upper section has blind windows. Further left, a projecting bay resembles a keep, with diagonal buttresses that have two set-offs and corbelled angle turrets, topped with a stepped parapet. It includes a three-light casement window in a chamfered surround with a returned hoodmould, and above it, a three-light window with round-arched heads.

To the south, there is a single light window and a projecting bay with a two-light window, leading to a castellated and turreted wall. To the north, a Tudor-arched window features wooden Y-tracery, with a three-light casement window above, also with a returned hoodmould. The front garden is enclosed by a low coped wall with attached iron railings.

The Gate House was built as part of the picturesque model village designed by Paxton for the Sixth Duke of Devonshire.
