Description
Monsal Dale Viaduct is a viaduct built between 1862 and 1863 to carry the Peak railway line. It is constructed of rubble limestone with blue brick dressings, and has undergone repairs using gritstone and red brick. The structure measures 300 feet long and stands 70 feet high, spanning the river Wye. It features five round arches with Staffordshire blue brick voussoirs and has brick parapets. The viaduct was criticized by John Ruskin for its impact on the natural beauty of the Wye valley.
