Description

Top Cottages is a terrace of three mill-workers' cottages built around 1843, likely by the architects Weightman & Hadfield. The cottages are constructed from coursed squared limestone with gritstone dressings and quoins, topped with Welsh slate roofs featuring wooden bargeboards and finials. They have two storeys and are characterized by two large, paired chimney stacks that rise from the roof pitch.

The south elevation displays three gabled bays, with the center bay being taller and projecting. The ground floor of the center bay features a three-light chamfered mullion window with a dripmould and diamond lights. On the first floor, there is a similar two-light window, and in the gable, a single light window with 20th-century glazing. The right-hand bay has two 20th-century windows with chamfered stone surrounds and dripmoulds, while the left-hand bay includes a two-light chamfered mullion window with a dripmould and a single light window with a dripmould above it.

These cottages are part of the mill settlement built to serve Cressbrook Mill and are arranged symmetrically with Nos 59 - 62 and Nos 66 - 69 Top Cottages. They are listed for their group value.
