Description
Top Cottages is a terrace of four mill-workers' cottages built around 1843, likely designed by Weightman & Hadfield. The cottages are constructed from coursed squared limestone with gritstone dressings and quoins, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring a central group of four stacks and two additional ridge stacks. They are single storey plus attic and have a symmetrical four-bay south elevation.
On the left side, there is a doorway with a stone surround set within a 20th-century porch. Each cottage features a 3-light chamfered mullion window with a drip mould and diamond lights. There are also doorways with stone surrounds and bracketed hoods. Above, four gabled dormers with wooden bargeboards and finials contain 2-light windows, mostly with diamond glazing.
These cottages are part of the mill settlement built to serve Cressbrook Mill and are arranged in a symmetrical composition with Nos 59 - 62 and Nos 63 - 65 Top Cottages.
