Description

A terrace of four cottages dating from around 1845, likely designed by Weightman & Hadfield, stands in the Parish of Litton Cressbrook. The cottages were built to house mill workers for Cressbrook Mill and are part of a planned settlement. Constructed of coursed rubble limestone with gritstone dressings and vermiculated quoins, the roof is slate, featuring wooden bargeboards and finials, topped with four paired stone ridge stacks. The south elevation is almost symmetrical, arranged over six bays. The central two bays feature two three-light chamfered mullion windows on the ground floor and two similar two-light windows above. These are flanked by projecting gabled bays, each containing a single-light window to the ground floor and a two-light window above. The right-hand gabled bay also has a doorway. The outer bays have a three-light window paired with a two-light window above. Some windows retain their original diamond-paned glass. The terrace forms a symmetrical grouping with numbers 44-45 and 46-49 Middle Row.
