Description

Cressbrook Cottage, located on Upper Lane in Litton, is a cottage and warehouse that has been converted into a pair of cottages. It was built around 1845, likely by the architects Weightman & Hadfield. The structure is made of rubble limestone with gritstone dressings and features vermiculated quoins. The roofs are covered with Welsh slate and have wooden bargeboards and finials.

The building is two storeys high, plus an attic, and has a T-plan layout. The north elevation includes a projecting gabled bay to the right, which has a doorway with a stone surround and a four-centred arch, along with a three-light chamfered mullion window, both featuring dripmoulds on the ground floor. Above, there is a two-light window with diamond lights and a dripmould, as well as a single light window in the gable, also with a dripmould. To the left, there is another three-light chamfered mullion window with dripmould and diamond lights, and a similar two-light window above. Further left, there is a doorway with a chamfered stone surround and a wooden gabled porch supported by brackets, topped with a slate roof, and a 20th-century window above.

The east elevation has a three-light window, a two-light window, and a single light window, all with diamond lights and dripmoulds. The south elevation features a gabled bay on the left that was originally a warehouse, with three segmental-arched openings stacked vertically, the middle of which was a doorway. The hoist has since been removed. This building is part of the mill settlement that was constructed to serve Cressbrook Mill.
