Description
Middle Row is a terrace of four mill-workers' cottages built around 1845, likely by the architects Weightman & Hadfield. The cottages are constructed from coursed rubble limestone with gritstone dressings and feature vermiculated quoins. They have a Welsh slate roof adorned with wooden bargeboards and finials, and there are four paired stone ridge stacks. The building is two storeys high with a symmetrical six-bay south elevation.
The central two bays include two 3-light chamfered mullion windows on the ground floor and two similar 2-light windows above. These are flanked by advanced gabled bays that have two single light windows and a door on the ground floor, along with a 2-light window above. The outer bays feature a 3-light window with a 2-light window above. Some of the windows retain their original diamond lights.
These cottages are part of the mill settlement built to serve Cressbrook Mill and contribute to a symmetrical composition with Nos 40 - 43 and Nos 44 - 45 Middle Row.
