Description
44-45 Middle Row is a pair of mill-workers' cottages built around 1845, likely designed by Weightman & Hadfield. The cottages are constructed from coursed rubble limestone with gritstone dressings and feature vermiculated quoins. They have a Welsh slate roof adorned with wooden bargeboards and finials, and a quadruple stone stack rises from the eaves between the two pitched roofs. The building is two storeys high with a twin gabled south elevation. On the ground floor, there are two three-light chamfered mullion windows. The first floor includes two similar two-light windows, two 20th-century windows, and a single light window in each gable. None of the windows retain their original diamond lights. These cottages are part of the mill settlement built to serve Cressbrook Mill and are arranged symmetrically with Nos 40-43 and Nos 46-49 Middle Row.
