Description
The Market Hall is a building that dates back to the 16th century, with remodelling from the 18th century. It features a robust ground floor made of massive coursed ashlar gritstone, while the first floor is constructed of brick with gritstone dressings. The building has quoins and rusticated detailing at the first floor level, along with coved eaves, moulded copings, and kneelers. The roof is made of stone slate and the overall plan is rectangular.
On the north elevation, the building stands two storeys high with two bays. It has two pointed arches that were formerly open but are now blind, supported by a central column and a moulded band. Above the arches and first floor openings, there are continuous flat band courses. The first floor features two 18th-century windows with mullions and transoms, which are fitted with leaded lights. The gables each have a single window, with an oval window positioned above.
