Description
Elton House Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that underwent alterations in 1766 and 1818. It is constructed from regularly coursed gritstone and features coped gables, kneelers, intermediate and end ridge stacks, a coved eaves band, and a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and four bays, primarily with sash windows, some of which have glazing bars set into flush stone frames. There are also some 20th-century windows. At the south end, there is a single three-light 18th-century flush-mullioned window. The farmhouse has two doorways: the central one has a massive surround and a lintel dated 1818, while the south end doorway features a painted stone surround and a shallow flat hood. A blocked doorway at the south end has a lintel dated 1766. The west (rear) elevation includes several small two-light chamfer-mullioned windows, some of which are blocked, as well as a blocked single light opening from the 17th century. Inside, one room is panelled with 17th-century square oak panelling, which includes a decorated frieze and a panelled door inscribed with 'HENRY KNIVETON IN THE YEAR 1665 THIS MADE'. Although the panelling is thought to be relocated, it is nearly contemporary with the house.
